Visitor's Information

Welcome to all Visitors

"Enter to Study and Worship God - Exit to Serve and Witness for Jesus Christ."

This is the mission statement that is embedded in the hearts and lives of the members, staff, and clergy here at Church Street. In 1817, William Rufus King laid out a city plan for Selma, which called for four major churches to be built on Church Street. Our Church is the only one still located on the original one-acre lot designated for their congregation, the corner of Church Street and Dallas Ave. We have a rich history here and it is inscribed through the beautiful stained glass windows, a baptismal fount that was given as a gift from the Jewish Temple, and many other symbols throughout the church.  We welcome you to be involved in the many exciting ministries at Church Street United Methodist Church.

Where and Who are we?

Church Street United Methodist Church is located at the intersection of Church Street and Dallas Avenue in historic downtown Selma, Alabama.

Church Street United Methodist Church consists of a wide range of different people, from all ages and different backgrounds. Whoever you are you are assured a very warm welcome at Church Street.

What to expect

For some people going anywhere for the first time can be a bit of a nerve-racking experience. To help avoid any worries here's a quick summary of what you can expect at Church Street. You'll be greeted by our welcoming team (called Greeters) as you enter the church. They will answer any questions you may have.  Some people are kind, polite and sweet-spirited until you try to sit in their pew but that is not the way we are at Church Street. Please feel free to sit in any seat. However, like most churches, the back seats are quickly taken.  Our aim is that whether you are just looking into Christianity for the first time or have been a Christian for many years that you will be encouraged and inspired by worshiping with us. We enter to study and worship God and exit to serve and witness for Jesus Christ.

What do Methodist believe?

United Methodist's believe in one true God- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe this relationship with God is possible because of Jesus (God's only son) who invites us to follow him.

Reconciliation Through Christ - "The offering Christ freely made on the cross is the perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world, redeeming man from all sin, so that no other satisfaction is required."*

The Sacraments - Baptism and The Lord's Supper are the two Sacraments ordained by Christ. We believe that these Sacraments "are symbols and pledges of the Christian's profession and of God's love toward us."*

*From The Book of Discipline of The United Methodist Church - 2000.

Through baptism, we accept God’s gifts through Jesus. There is no strict rule among United Methodists about how baptism must be performed, although sprinkling water on the head of the person being baptized is most common. Everyone is accepted and welcome at the communion table, whether members of the Church or not, children or adults.

If you are interested in exploring a faith in Jesus Christ then please join us on a Sunday or contact the office.

Where do I park?

We have a parking place just for you. There is visitor parking directly in front of the church on Church Street. The church parking lot is located behind the Fellowship Hall which can be entered from Selma Ave. Street parking abounds around the church on Dallas Ave. and Church Street.
